Wheat Prototype (16′ tall)
Here we are exploring a 16' version of the Wheat sculpture. One of the best ways to know if it will work is to just do it, down and dirty. You get to see all the issues that need to be resolved.

Here is my first attempt. It is showing promise.

The wheat seedpod was a lot larger and mor complicated that the grass seedpod and it needed to sprout whiskers. Proportionally, if the whiskers were to be made of 1/8″ stainless steel rod, a common and less expensive rod, the height of the wheat stalk could be as tall as 30 feet. After discovering that I could buy 3′ long 1/16″ stainless rods (they are just solderless welding rods) fairly inexpensively, I decided to start with an 16 footer.

I really like the way the 1/16″ stainless whiskers work in this prototype. If I can figure out how to finish the PLA surface and pick a good color, I think I’m on to something. I wonder what it would cost to golf leaf the wheatpod? Or if it could even be done…golden wheat, yeah, why not.
