Paravel Proposal (Grass or Wheat?)
This opportunity is ideal for either the Tall Grasses or the Wheat sculptures. With the Grass ready to propose, this post explores what would be needed to get the Wheat ready for the application process.

Paravel Proposal

I’m working on a proposal that we have a good chance of getting; because it is a local public-art calls and we fit their criteria.

Paravel is in Eden Prairie. The RFQ deadline is January 26 and the budget is $25,000, which is large enough to propose a 5 or 6 stalk “Tall Grass” sculpture. However, the “Long Whiskered Wheat” is a possibility as well.

The Wheat sculpture is not as fully developed as the Grasses. There are two many issues still to resolve, plus the budget may not be big enough, especially if we are to use all stainless. If we proposed 3 stalks, instead of 5 the budget should work.

Wheat issues still to be resolved…

Below is an image with 4 renders of a 28′ tall, 5-stalk wheat sculpture. I am using the HDRI environments that I found on PolyHaven.com. HDRI stands for High Dynamic Range Imaging.

IMHO, HDRIs are gods gift to sculptors. They let you see your visions in real-world situations, long before you build anything. However, I have already started building prototypes for “Long Whiskered Wheat.” See below.

4 renders of 5 stalked “Long Whiskered Wheat” at 28′ tall.

Size?

Seedpod Size
I am considering two different sizes for this sculpture.

Diameter: 6″
Length: 24″
Stem Diameter 2″
Total Height: 28′

Diameter: 10″
Length: 40″
Stem Diameter 3.5″
Total Height: 40′

Whisker Size
I don’t think we need the whiskers to be any larger than 1/4″ diameter, even for the largest size. It may be possible they could be as small at 1/16, although sourcing rod any longer than 3 feet is problematic. The only way to know for sure is to see it in real. Renders will not the not work in this case.

Material

Cedar Wood?
These renders show the wheat seedpods as cedar wood. The question is, can they be carved out of a cedar log. I need to find a skilled wood carver.

Seed Pods Chromed?
Another thought is to make the seed pod out of PLA plastic and have it chromed. I’m not even sre if this is possible.

Gold Leafed?
Also could the PLA seed pod be gold leafed? Would this make it last longer?

One of the advantages of making the seed pod out of PLA it it will be much lighter, which would make the engineering easier.

This prototype is made of PLA plastic and 3d printed in two sections, stacked and glued. The whiskers are 1/16″ stainless.

The seedpod is about 15″ x 4″ (please check).

I don’t like the section breaks and it makes it hard to make clean surfaces. SO I am in the process of 3d printing each seed separately in order to assemble them after preparing the surfaces.

This one is also in PLA and stacked in sections. (add dimensions)
